Review Hamsters Holding Hands is a fun counting book for young children. This book provides vivid illustrations of hamsters doing fun (or funny) actions. Goodreads.com (2017) states “[t]he illustrations are bright and graphic with lots of humorous details to keep both child and adult engaged.” The hilarious images engage children and encourage them to count each of the hamsters as they appear on the page from “[o]ne hamster wants to play” all the way to “[t]en hamsters wave goodbye” (Reich, 2012, unnumbered). Themes
Counting Animals Application Librarians can engage children with the fun pictures and help them with counting. The counting can continue with a Hamsters Holding Hands themed craft project when children decide what the hamsters are doing and how many there are. Awards Won: ALA Notable Children’s Book, 1994; Bulletin Blue Ribbon, 1994; Horn Book Fanfare 1995 selection; Parenting Magazine Best Children’s Book of 1994 Review This endearing bedtime story is told mostly through pictures punctuated occasionally by speech bubbles stating the repetitive phrase, “goodnight, Armadillo”, “goodnight, Lion”, and so on. Watercolor and colored pencil illustrations in blues, greens, and purples evoke the nighttime setting while yellows and pinks highlight objects illuminated by light from the flashlight, streetlight, or moon. Children will delight in the Gorilla’s mischief as he leads the animals to the zookeeper’s bedroom and they attempt to spend the night, unbeknownst to the zookeeper and his wife. Silliness ensues as each animal answers the wife with “goodnight”, shown in multiple white speech bubbles against a completely black background. Turn the page and we see only a pair of surprised eyes in the dark. Humor, suspense, and mischief combine to make Goodnight, Gorilla a hit among toddlers and preschool children. The lack of words encourages children to invent the story line and the simple repetitive phrase “goodnight” combined with pictorial cues allows pre-readers to connect written words with plot. Themes
Board Book; Humor; Mischief; Animals; Bedtime Application After reading the book to a preschool class, act out the story using a “Duck Duck Goose” type game. Kids sit in a circle and one child (the Gorilla) walks around the outside “releasing” each child from the circle by saying “Goodnight [name of child]. As they are released, the children tip toe behind the zookeeper until all the animals are released. The last child to be released then leads the others back to their places where they lay down and go to sleep. Read-alikes: Alborough, Jez. (2001). Hug. Brown, Margaret Wise. (1947). Goodnight Moon. ISBN 978-1402708701. Summary Sometimes I like to curl up in a ball So no one can see me because I'm so small. Little wombat spends a day doing favorite things--what could they be? Are they your favorites, too? Let's look and see! He especially enjoys walking around and around, and doing a pigeon step till he falls down. Or sticking out his pink tongue--and pulling funny faces (now that can be fun)! And maybe he'll jump just as high as he can, and see how much noise he will make when he lands. But when the day ends and the sun starts to fall...he goes back home to mama and curls into a ball. Good night! Age Range: 2-5 years Review This whimsical nature-filled board book is a great pick for young readers. Fuge's bright illustrations are sure to elicit giggles of amusement and delight, and Churchill's text is just the right mix of sweet and silly. The perfect bedtime story for active toddlers! Themes Animals, Family Love, Nature, Bedtime Application If Librarians use this title for storytime, they can ask young listeners to follow along and act like little wombat, rolling into a ball, being a tree, pigeon stepping till they fall down, and best of all making super silly faces! Summary Using the same innovative production technique and brilliant aesthetic cheered by parents, educators, and children alike in the acclaimed TouchThinkLearn series, here is an alphabet that literally adds a new dimension to learning. Raised die-cut pieces nestled in mirroring indented cut-outs engage readers on both visual and tactile levels. Age Range: 3-5 years old Review One of the biggest ways that our youngest friends learn new things is through their sense of touch. This book combines sensory elements with literacy learning, and helps familiarize young children with the shapes and meanings of the letters of the alphabet, providing a fun and firm foundation for early literacy. Themes Letters / Alphabet Simple Words Simple Images Application Add this board book to your early literacy collection to show a dedication to teaching the alphabet and having fun! The pictures demonstrate the parent's care for his/her child. There is an element of text play in the way the words are laid out on the page. The differences in text sizes and boldness adds drama to the reading and emphasizes the meaning behind the words. Plus, it’s incredibly interactive when presented as a song that a parent and child can sing together. It’s catchy, but simple tune is perfect for spontaneous reenactments with or without the book (Flock, 2017). Themes Parental Love Love Dogs Puppy Mother’s/Father’s Day Valentine’s Day Application While it works really well for a close reading between a parent and a child, I’ve also used this title with great success in a Music and Motion Storytime. I do wish it came in a larger format for this personally, but I just got closer to the kids, so they could see the pictures and text better. I encouraged everyone to sing, howl, and make the kissy noise with me. It works well for themes like Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day (Flock, 2017). Read-alikes Rossetti-Shustak, B. (2005). Its sweet illustrations and its muted watercolor palette are comforting and innocent (Flock, 2017). Themes Body Awareness Movement Rhyme Application This book could be used in a Baby Lapsit program, and the parents could be encouraged to point to the body parts as they are being read about. This book could also be used with toddlers in a Storytime, and they could be encouraged to act out the book and do what the main character does. It works well with both age groups. Review Sparse, rhythmic text is integrated into colorful, dynamic illustrations, which appear to be digitally assembled from bright, textured paper. Objects, set against a solid colored background, are easily recognizable, though some pages depict items that might be new to young children, like cassette tapes. Most pages feature expressive people of many skin tones and cultures playing instruments, singing, dancing, or listening to music. The illustrations successfully depict people from many races and cultures without making assumptions. One page shows a black woman rocking out on electric guitar, while another depicts two women in headscarves listening to music on headphones. Yet another shows a family – two dark-skinned men and a little girl – dancing. A glossary of musical terms completes this delightful book and adds interest for both the child and adult reader. Indeed, this book would be fun for music lovers of all ages. Themes Music Opposites Application The compact size and pictorial information make the book ideal for young children to browse on their own, but this book would also work for a small storytime audience because the bold illustrations are visible from a distance. It would be especially relevant to a music and movement program. Read-alikes
