McDermott, G. Anansi the Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti. Square Fish, 1972. 41 pages. PB $7.99 ISBN 9780805003116
Summary Anansi the Spider is one of the great folk heroes of the world. He is a rogue, a mischief maker, and a wise, lovable creature who triumphs over larger foes. In this traditional Ashanti tale, Anansi sets out on a long, difficult journey. Threatened by Fish and Falcon, he is saved from terrible fates by his sons. But which of his sons should Anansi reward? Calling upon Nyame, the God of All Things, Anansi solves his predicament in a touching and highly resourceful fashion. In adapting this popular folktale, Gerald McDermott merges the old with the new, combining bold, rich color with traditional African design motifs and authentic Ashanti language rhythms. Age Range: 4-9 years old Awards Won: Caldecott Honor Book (1973), ALA Notable Children's Book Review This colorful folk tale about a spider named Anansi is an excellent read aloud choice. Bright geometric artwork inspired by Africa accompanies the adventurous story of Anansi, his six sons, and how they each use their special gifts to save their father from both a fish and a bird.

Review Puss in Boots is a well-known classic tale, though not necessarily in the original version. This version of the tell translated by Maalcolm Arthur and beautifully illustrated b Fred Marcellino, introduces children to the devious cat who wears boots and hope to improve his master’s life. The stunning images complement the tale that is being told in a way that younger children can follow along with the story and that older readers can see how they match the text. Themes Adventure Courage Cats Folk Lore pplication

Awards Won: Caldecott Medal Winner (2010), ALA Notable Children Book (2010), School Library Top 100 Picture Books #37, Parent’s Choice Gold Award Winner (2009) Review Pinkney’s artful retelling uses no words to convey this classic tale for children of all ages. The few words which are contained are the animal sounds as they carry on their story. This book wonderfully shows that even the smallest can lend a helping hand, and that sometimes the largest most powerful among us needs help. Themes Kindness Animals Helping Others Application The illustrations of the book and absence of words provide ample opportunities for young readers. Kirchoff (2013) in her review notes that “The book lacks any substantial narrative, which allows the young reader to fully engage in the illustrations.” Librarians can ask students to tell the story about lion and mouse using only the illustrations this can engage both early and advanced readers to the story. Review The author/illustrator of the popular Toot & Puddle books and creator of the character Holly Hobbie brings her enchanting art to the folklore genre. In Hansel & Gretel, Hobbie diverges from her usual sunny stories with a version of the tale that is as dark and harrowing as Neil Gaiman’s or Lorenzo Matotti’s. “The woodcutter finally agreed to abandon his children to the forest”. An artist’s note contains source information. Although she based the text on Grimms’ Tales for Young and Old, translated from the German by Ralph Manheim (1977), Hobbie’s intention was “to let the illustrations speak for themselves, so the text has been shortened substantially form the original”(Hobbie, 2015, end note). The decision proved successful. Eerie scenes of Hansel and Gretel lost in the forest are played out in transparent watercolor, pen & ink, with gouache. Hobbie uses indigo blue in place of her usual ultramarine to convey the darkness and impending doom of imprisonment by the evil witch. Hansel and tow-headed Gretel are fair skinned and the witch is unnaturally white, which gives her an inhuman quality. Page design is formal, which seems appropriate for a classic tale. Most pages feature text on white opposite illustrations with an occasional two-page spread. Design elements combined with a concise version of the story make the book accessible for younger audiences while honoring the tale as a classic for all ages. Themes Folklore; Fairy Tales; German Fairy Tales; Witches Read-alikes Hyman, Trina Schart (1983). Little Red Riding Hood. Grimm, Jacob (1987). Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Read Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel & Gretel, and other woodsy tales, then lead families on a forest hike. Better yet, tell the stories in the forest. This type of outreach will benefit the library as well as the park, as it will attract visitors to both. Hansel & Gretel fairy tale hike. Photo by Sarah Jo Zaharako References

Review Set in the African jungle, this unique take on Little Red Riding Hood features a brown-skinned heroine who outsmarts her conniving nemesis. The choice to feature a strong, courageous female as the primary character is a refreshing change, especially in the folklore genre. Large text and creative typography combine with lively illustrations to create an animated adventure. Each page offers so much to look at that children will enjoy reviewing the story just by looking at the pictures. Smith creates drawings in pencil, then scans them into his computer and colors them with Photoshop. The process results in high energy, cartoon-like illustrations with warm, vibrant hues. Scanned fabric colaged into the drawings adds textural dimension.
