Expressive ink and watercolor scenes set against washes of yellow and orange bring the words to life. Sojourner is described as “big, black, beautiful” throughout the story, which culminates in her rousing speech on women’s rights given at the 1851 convention in Akron, Ohio. End papers include additional information about Sojourner Truth and a bibliography. Themes

Review Locomotive shares the adventure of travelers on the Transcontinental railway in wonderful poem form. The book is full of detail images, labeled to help readers know what the poem is describing. People’s Magazine call the book “[a] stunningly illustrated tale of the earliest days of America’s railroads” (Floca, n.d.). Brian provides historical information about the Native tribes who lived in the West before the trains, though they are only in passing. The book has a list of sources on the final pages with a description of the railroad allowing for further discussion of the topics mentioned in the text. Themes Travel Trains Railroads Transportation History Application Teachers can use this text to help introduce their students to the railway or trains. The poem provides a story that can be discussed, while the images show aspects of life on the railroad. Students can engage with the story in many ways from talking about Brian’s poetic free verse to discussing details in the images. Read-alikes Cooper, E. (2013). Train. Eaton, J. C. (2013). Review Jenkins, a conservation biologist, writes factually about a variety of fascinating frogs in a narrative style that makes the information accessible for children. Large text depicts simple concepts. “This one is called a flying frog, although it can’t really fly" (Jenkins, 2016). More detailed, complex information is presented in a smaller font. This design makes the book work for both very young and older audiences. Bright, mixed media illustrations portray the actual size of the various species from the Goliath frog that takes up the entire page to tiny bug-sized frogs. An introduction provides general information about frogs including their evolution from egg to tadpole to adult frog. Endpapers include an index and a list of websites. Themes Juvenile Non-fiction; Narrative Non-fiction; Frogs; Amphibians Application The book is perfect for a classroom unit on conservation or metamorphosis as well as a comparison for fiction and non-fiction books about frogs. It could also be used for a frog-themed storytime, combined with fictional frog friends like Toad & Frog or Froggie. As a craft, children can decorate their own frog prints using torn paper and multi-media. The website Teach Junkie features 25 simple frog and toad activities.
