Series BINKY SERIES
Review The Binky series entices young readers with quirky characters and hilarious plots. Sparse text in simple sentences is supported by copious cartoon illustrations that cue young readers. Emergent readers can participate in a read-aloud by sounding out the onomatopoeia in the action words. Ink and watercolor pictures in muted greys and accent colors are entertaining but do not overwhelm. Binky is adorably round, like many indoor cats, and his family (a young boy and his mother) are light-skinned. The book is presented in a comic book style that will attract graphic novel fans and reluctant readers. Themes
Juvenile Graphic Novel; Cats; Family Life; Humor Application Recommend to transitional readers, graphic novel fans, and lovers of space cats. He personifies the diverse barnyard characters with eccentric but believable traits and captures the imaginations of children with the humorous, adventurous, suspenseful plot. Williams’s endearing black and white illustrations support the complex emotions of the characters, which are balanced with lively action and gentle text. In many ways, Charlotte’s Web is a standard for measuring all children’s books and is a timeless read for children of all ages. Themes Early Chapter Book; Transitional Reader; Friendship; Animals; Fantasy; Farm Life Application The book is best read aloud by an adult to children he or she cares about. Review Captain Underpants is condemned for offensive language and for being unsuited for its age group. However, here is a book series that is funny, engaging, interactive, and imaginative. Each chapter book in the series introduces new characters and adventures. They all feature comic strips amid the text and one is devoted to activities like how-to-instructions, mazes, stickers, and make-your-own flip books. Short chapters and hilarious cartoon illustrations on every page make the book well suited for young readers, who are well rewarded for their efforts. Captain Underpants taps into a kid’s fantasy in the same way provocative novels engage an adult’s interest. For instance, what kid hasn’t plotted hypothetical revenge on a mean teacher or school bully? Many books encourage children to be complacent, submissive, sweet, kind and happy. Captain Underpants empathizes with kids’ “other” emotions- their silly sides, their naughty sides, and yes, even their vengeful sides. Most importantly, Captain Underpants inspires kids to read.

Review Andrea Davis Pinkney’s rousing, lyrical text combines with Brian Pinkney’s swirling illustrations to portray the emotion and energy of Sojourner Truth’s story. Expressive ink and watercolor scenes set against washes of yellow and orange bring the words to life. Sojourner is described as “big, black, beautiful” throughout the story, which culminates in her rousing speech on women’s rights given at the 1851 convention in Akron, Ohio. End papers include additional information about Sojourner Truth and a bibliography. Themes

Much of the book is wordless, so there is an element of letting the characters speak for themselves through their actions. The reader can tell that the dark-skinned little girl doesn’t have many friends and comes from a trailer park and meager means. She’s learned to make the best of it though and has developed the ability to fix machines. In a sense, fixing the robot and the friendship and adventures that take place, thereafter, seems to mend the girl in a sense, as well (Flock, 2017). Montgomery, L. M. Anne of Green Gables. Aladdin, 1908. 448 pages. PB $7.99 ISBN 9781442490000
Summary When Anne Shirley arrives at Green Gables, she surprises everyone: first of all, she’s a girl, even though Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew specifically asked for an orphan boy to help around the farm. And second of all, she’s not just any girl: she has bright red hair, a wild imagination, and can talk a mile a minute. But she also has a sweet disposition and quick wit, and Anne (with an “e” of course—it’s so much more distinguished!) soon finds her place in Avonlea, making a friend in her neighbor Diana Barry and attending the local school, where she spurns the advances of the popular and handsome Gilbert Blythe when he commits the ultimate sin of making fun of her hair. Anne has a temper as fiery as her hair and a knack for finding trouble, and she also has a big heart and a positive attitude that affects everyone she meets. Age Range: 8+ years old Series Information Anne of Green Gables Series
