Review Jenkins, a conservation biologist, writes factually about a variety of fascinating frogs in a narrative style that makes the information accessible for children. Large text depicts simple concepts. “This one is called a flying frog, although it can’t really fly" (Jenkins, 2016). More detailed, complex information is presented in a smaller font. This design makes the book work for both very young and older audiences. Bright, mixed media illustrations portray the actual size of the various species from the Goliath frog that takes up the entire page to tiny bug-sized frogs. An introduction provides general information about frogs including their evolution from egg to tadpole to adult frog. Endpapers include an index and a list of websites. Themes Juvenile Non-fiction; Narrative Non-fiction; Frogs; Amphibians Application The book is perfect for a classroom unit on conservation or metamorphosis as well as a comparison for fiction and non-fiction books about frogs. It could also be used for a frog-themed storytime, combined with fictional frog friends like Toad & Frog or Froggie. As a craft, children can decorate their own frog prints using torn paper and multi-media. The website Teach Junkie features 25 simple frog and toad activities.
